The Worlds Second Oldest Profession...Plumber

Man can live for 30 days without food. Without clean drinking water, 3 days. Ancient civilizations recognized this and water management became a priority for safety and heath.

The word plumber comes from ancient Rome. The Latin word for lead is plumbum. Men that worked with lead became known as plumbers. The pipes supplying Rome were made of lead that brought clean water

from the country into the city and and carried waste water and sewage out to the sea.

A Word About Indoor Plumbing

The Europeans had a memory lapse when it came to good water management during the Middle Ages. The rest of the world had learned the

lessons of safe water management before the birth of Christ. The Middle East, China and South America remained ahead of Europe until modern times.

While Europe suffered through plagues and population upheaval during the "Dark Ages." The rest of the world kept moving forward. The density of European

cities lead to many unsafe practices. I wasn't until the 19th century Europe caught up. The earliest settlers of the New World brought their understanding of water

management with them. Indoor plumbing was a major step forward. The first example of indoor plumbing occurred in Boston at the Tremont Hotel in 1826.

For much of the United States indoor plumbing did not become the norm until post World War Two. Today nearly every home has a bathroom for everyone in the home.
